The Saskatchewan Hunting Angling and Trapping License (known as your HAL account or your HAL ID) is the first step in getting your license to hunt and fish in one of the greatest outdoor destinations on the planet.

HAL is simply your account profile with the Saskatchewan Ministry of Environment. Your HAL account is free (hunting and fishing licenses are not). To create your HAL account, you’ll need the following information:

  • Name
  • Date of birth
  • Address (mailing and home address)
  • Phone number
  • At least one identification number (used to access your account so you don’t need to memorize your HAL number)
  • Identification details (including gender, height, eye colour and hair colour)
  • If you’re also creating a web account, you’ll need to create a password and provide an email address so you can be sent notifications and email receipts. If you forget your password, password reset information will be sent to the email address on your account.

If you have previously fished or hunted in Saskatchewan, your HAL ID will be printed on your license.

Your HAL account is good for life. Once you have your HAL account, you’ll need to supply your HAL ID each time you purchase a hunting or fishing license. You can purchase all licenses online.

A Saskatchewan annual fishing license is good from the start of the season through the end of ice fishing season. In recent years, the start date changed from being based on the 1st, 3rd or 4th Saturday in May (Southern Zone, Central Zone, Northern Zone) to a set date in May regardless of day of the week. The dates are shown in the table below.

Your fishing license will be non-species specific, permitting you to fish for all species of game fish in Saskatchewan.

Zone Open Close
Southern Zone May 5, 2019 March 31, 2020
Central Zone May 15 2019 March 31, 2020
Northern Zone May 25, 2019 April 15, 2020

An annual fishing license may be purchased at any time but will expire at the end of the season.

Note: Possession of a Saskatchewan Angling License does not permit you to hunt in Saskatchewan. You will need to purchase the appropriate hunting licenses.

Fees for non-resident licenses as of November 2019:

Hunting Angling and Trapping License (HAL Account) Free
Angling License – One-day $20
Angling License – Three-day $40
Angling License – Annual $100

Gear for Fishing

Saskatchewan isn’t always a land of snow of ice. Summer weather reaches well into sunburn territory, so be prepared for wide temperature swings from windy cold to t-shirt weather in the same day.

Angling Records

There are many types of angling records, based on type of fishing tackle used, rod & reel, fly fishing, bow fishing, catch and keep vs catch and release and ice fishing vs open water fishing.
